Board Approves 2011-12 State Basketall Draw Criteria
11/22/2011

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s (WIAA) Executive Board approved the following draw criteria for the 2011-2012 State Basketball Tournament for all classifications during a conference call on Nov. 21.

Draw Criteria:
The two teams that qualify from each regional will be drawn into opposite halves of the bracket.

Possible Example:
In most classifications the #1 and #2 teams from each District are playing at the same regional site although they are not playing each other.  If both teams win and advance to the state championships, they would not play each other in the first round.

For Districts with three or more allocations, the additional teams are being sent to one, two or all three other regional sites.  If any of those teams win and advance to the state championships, they could be drawn to play against their District #1 or #2 teams in the first round.

Process for Draws:
The draw for the boys’ tournament will be conducted first and the boys’ championship game will be scheduled first during the school years beginning with an odd number.  The draw for the girls’ tournament will be conducted first and the girls’ championship game will be scheduled first during the school years beginning with an even number.

The 1B, 1A and 3A draws will be conducted first during the school years beginning with an odd number. The 2B, 2A and 4A draws will be conducted first during the school years beginning with an even number.

Bracket Definitions:
The total tournament first round bracket includes games 1 through 4.  The top half bracket includes games 1 and 2, while the bottom half bracket includes games 3 and 4.

All eight teams will be available for the first draw.
2  The home teams for games 1 through 4 will be drawn first.
3  As the first team from a regional is drawn, the second team from that regional will be placed into the opposite half bracket.
4  Visiting teams for games 4 through 1 will then be drawn.

Draw Schedule:
Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the WIAA office
11 AM  1B and 2B Boys and Girls
1 PM  1A and 2A Boys and Girls
3 PM  3A and 4A Boys and Girls
