WIAA Names Orting’s Salazar, Jenkins’ Kirry as Give Me 5 Star Students of the Month
12/9/2015

RENTON, Wash. – The WIAA is pleased to announce Orting Middle School’s Ridge Salazar and Jenkins Junior/Senior High School’s Lily Kirry as the November "Give Me 5" Star Students of the Month.

Salazar is an eighth grader at Orting Middle School in Orting. An active football, basketball, wrestling and track athlete, Salazar, was a District Finalist in four events. He was nominated by his Athletic Director, Karin Buchholz, for his leadership in sports and on campus. Salazar is looked up to by his peers and teammates, and is well respected by the staff and students of the school.

“Ridge has modeled good sportsmanship through hard fought victories and losses showing consistent character," Bucholz said. "He is working with ASB on several projects to help students feel respected and a part of Orting Middle School.”

Kirry is an eighth grader at Jenkins Junior/Senior High School in Chewelah. She is a member of the volleyball team, track team, drama club and is the school's ASB President. Kirry was nominated by her teacher and Athletic Director, Rocky Verbeck, for her “go getting” attitude and leading by example.

"Lily listens to ideas and implements for the good of the entire student body,"
Verbeck said.

Recently, Kirry was chosen out of 350 high school and junior high school students to present a monologue at the Inland Northwest Theater Arts Festival (INTAF).

The students will be featured on the Activities Matter website and the Middle Level website
The monthly campaign is dedicated to highlighting two middle school students that demonstrate the core principles of the program; honor, sportsmanship, courage, respect, and citizenship.

The Activities Matter website was launched at the beginning of the 2015 school year and is designed to be a resource for member schools and their communities to support the case for interscholastic sports and activities. Activities Matter consolidates a variety of dynamic resources, programs, and original content to highlight the long-term benefits associated with student participation in sports and activities.
